Excused: Dan Bartley, Judith Grillo, Ed Hartmann, Anne Kerrigan, Sr. Regina McAuley, Mary Steele, Ken Selvester Absent: Joe Kern Guest: Tom Myles Meeting opened in prayer led by Penny with reflection by Peggy. Agenda Discussion: I: Approval of July 20, 2006 Board Minutes: Minutes approved and will be posted on the VOTF web site. II: Legislative Initiative: Presentation by Tom Myles: Proposal by Tom Myles and Tom Lloyd, with the assistance of Joan Hopkins, to meet with all Long Island legislative representatives, Senators and Assembly persons as a first priority and going forward, to meet with every elected local representative. Purpose is to get to know reps, for reps to put a face on VOTF Catholics and to educate/inform legislators re the following: That the New York State Catholic Conference of Bishops speaks for bishops and not the majority of Catholics That VOTF focus is support for victims of sexual abuse That sexual abuse of children is at epidemic proportions That 20% of children are abused before the age of 18 That sexual abuse needs to be discussed openly That talking openly removes the stigma and allows victims to come forward That VOTF represents 3000 voters on Long Island That VOTF advocates for legislation for the protection of children, for example, VOTF advocates adding not only clergy to the list of mandatory reporters but anyone who suspects anyone in authority of abusing a child. As a point of clarification, Tom stated that the Mandatory Reporting Law currently in effect, mandates that the health provider, for example, must report suspicion of sexual abuse, only if they suspect abuse by the parent. Implementation: Tom requests that VOTF Board and general membership arrange for personal meetings with local Senators and Assembly persons. Once appointment has been made, member asked to contact the committee who will join the meeting. Members present agreed to contact their local reps and inform committee accordingly. III: Legislative Committee: Joan B. presented web site posting that will go out to general membership in search of Ad Hoc Legislative Committee. She will also email Search notice to general membership. Board in agreement with plan. IV: Board Membership: Peggy discussed upcoming election; nominations are being accepted until August 25, 2006 after which Nominating Committee will interview all candidates. Joan B read letter of resignation from Sr Regina who is unable to continue as board member however, will continue as a member of the Prayer Committee. V: National VOTF Initiatives: Joan B discussed National Newsletter which includes Natl Fall Action Plans. Four actions were identified with request for LIVOTF participation , namely, Accountability, Local Politicians Forum, Diocese Report Card and Rosary Day. Of the four identified, LIVOTF is actively engaged in the first three. In place of Rosary Day it was suggested that LIVOTF pray the prayer provided by Sr Regina at the April 2004 Faith Conference, an adapted version of the prayer that was written by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood N.Y. at Chapter 2006. Kevin to include prayer in mailing to general membership with intent to encourage prayer at regular intervals. VI: VOTF Mass: Mass at The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island on August 12, 2006 was concelebrated by Msgr. Peter Pflomm and Fr. Gerald Twomey. All present who attended reported on the success of the celebration; Mass, picnic and camaraderie enjoyed by all. VII: September 12 2006 Petition Presentation: Penny reported on the number of responses received thus far. Jean reported that preparation for lunch for 100 has been made. All present urged to encourage member participation. Mailing to go out August 15 with particulars re days events, letter from Dan with copy of summary of latest audit done by Dick Grafer. Penny noted that Mass has been changed from 12:10 to 12 noon. Joan will email new time to members prior to event. New Business: Phil presented a detailed proposal of projects for which funding is requested for two foreign mission parishes in the Dominican Republic which are sponsored by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. These parishes comprise sixty four villages situated on top of a mountain. Phil requested that the VOTF Compassion Fund allocate $3000 to provide kitchen equipment for Villa Andres. Villa Andres is a Retreat and Formation Center under construction for the Parishes of San Pedro Apostol and Nuestra Senora de Fatima, named in honor of Fr. Andy Connelly, a Rockville Centre priest who purchased the property and worked for ten years in the Parish San Pedro Apostol. Motion was made and seconded to allocated $3000 of Compassion Fund money to be sent directly to Msgr.John Cervini at the Parish of San Pedro Apostol. By-Laws: Joan B requested Board accept the amended By-Laws, submitted by Pat Zirkel on December 7, 2005( date sent by Pat to Board for review). Discussion ensued re need to revise By-Laws to reflect proposed change to Province Coordinator Board position. A motion was made to accept amended By-Laws until the new board that convenes in November has an opportunity to evaluate the most effective and efficient method of representation for Province Coordinators, i.e., as Board members or as a Representative Council. Motion was seconded and all present approved. The approval date of acceptance of amended By-Laws is August 17, 2006. Meeting ended in prayer.
